ABOUT THE PAINTING

Eve’s paintings concern human interaction with the natural world, specifically investigating ways in which Americans view nature, from its extreme manifestation in the wilderness, to urban gardens and public parks. Her work is heavily influenced by the past 40 summers she has spent in a cabin in the remote Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho.

Featured above is work from her series Wild Signs and Take Only Pictures. Wild Signs uses triangular stretchers to represent triangular shapes in nature such as mountains and valleys. The morphing of her triangles through her painting aims to represent the arbitrary ways in which humans designate and carve up wilderness without respect for the dynamics of ecosystems. Take Only Pictures is a series of 16-18 foot panoramic paintings, and was influenced by Le Corbusier’s description of the long horizontal window that simultaneously gives and denies the viewer access to nature. The long horizontal window opens the viewer broadly to the landscape while affording no place for their feet, allowing them to experience the paradox of wilderness in America – humans can designate wilderness areas and experience their power, but they cannot be a part of it.
